My old refrigerated AC system has R22, is that illegal?

This is a common question that customers ask us. The short answer is no. It is not illegal to have R22 refrigerants.

The entities that are subject to the ban on R22 Refrigerant are the manufacturers of HVAC equipment and companies that import refrigerants from other countries.

R22 has been in the process of being phased out for about a decade with a target year of 2020. So, at this point, we are still able to purchase both parts and refrigerant for the old R22 systems but they tend to cost more.

At this point, 99% of residential AC systems being made are 410a systems.
